As you may or may not be aware, our lovely government has a system in place where any average Joe can petition the White House and if they can muster up 25,000 "signatures" their petition receives an official response. Pretty neat eh?

So not too long ago Tesla was encouraging people to sign a petition to encourage the government to do a way with the archaic laws that prevent auto manufacturers from selling directly to the consumer.

So I just received an email in which the government responded to this petition and their official response was basically to ignore the question altogether. Well, there was a tiny little blurb about how Congress would need to make any changes but other than that it was paragraph after paragraph about how much the administration has done to improve consumer choice and almost nothing to directly address the petition's complaint: archaic laws preventing legitimately innovative business' like Tesla from selling their product.

It's funny that everything that has to do with direct sales have absolutely nothing to do with the EPA and MPG's yet it seems all the response talks about is the EPA and MPG's.

It doesn't matter it tesla was powered by a v24 and got 0.01 MPG. The question and petition would be the same, to allow direct sales.

I've never said this before since I'm not even american but :

THANKS OBAMA!

Non-answer answers nothing. Still though; the president cannot just change the laws at will because MAD SIGNATURES ON DAT PETITION, YO! Real action would require congressional effort no one in either chamber is going to give in the middle of election season.

Exactly. I can't imagine why anyone would be surprised or riled by this response.

I agree however don't insult people's intelligence by almost entirely ignoring the purpose of the petition and instead using it as a pulpit to get your rhetoric in front of the masses. It's transparent and pathetic.

Well said! This is almost as intellectually insulting as the petition site the Texas Automobile Dealer's Association (TADA) put out. http://carbuying.jalopnik.com/the-texas-auto…

This one is only slightly less insulting because it gives irrelevant information instead of being blatantly hypocritical...
